What is D.U.M.B?
In this article, I am going to be explaining how Brendon Burchard’s D.U.M.B. Goals helped me in finding my undying drive in what I do. Brendon Burchard once stated that S.M.A.R.T. Goals are for small-minded people who are in pursuit of only short term goals. I for one however believe that we should be setting both D.U.M.B. Goals and S.M.A.R.T. Goals. For a further understanding of what these two phrases mean, S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-telling. It has been proven to be very effective when it comes to short term goals. D.U.M.B. Goals on the other hand stands for Dream-driven, Uplifting, Method-friendly and Behaviour-driven Goals.
Who am I?
For the last five years, I have been pursuing a degree in real estate management and development whilst joining a real estate company to earn some side income. However for the first year and a half of being there, I still haven’t been able to close in any sales. Then I realized that the marketing strategy and method used by not only the company that I was working for, but also the entire real estate industry, was not very effective and eminently traditional.
So I started learning more about marketing. I would find resources, videos, courses and read up further in depth into marketing. That’s when I started to set my S.M.A.R.T goals to perform and strike off my short term goals. I set my personal goals using the S.M.A.R.T goals method in view of my short term goals. I realized one thing though, that I was lacking something bigger for me to pursue and achieve. With no bigger picture in mind, that meant that I was lacking the meaning and the drive in doing what I did in real estate. It also meant that I had no strong reasons to pursue all these short term goals.
That’s when I was introduced to Brendon Buchard’s D.U.M.B. goals. I learned about it and strongly feel as though it is something that everyone should apply in their lives. I decided to build a marketing agency that will make it possible and simple for businesses to do marketing. This would help them bring their business to the next level and in turn, also bring their life to the next level.
D.U.M.B for Me
To have a goal like derived from Brendon Buchard’s D.U.M.B. goals would mean that your goals are indeed the embodiment of what it stands for. Dream-driven, Uplifting, Method-Friendly (to me-which creates a set of actions that I have to follow through everyday when I meet a client or when I do something for the business, in view of achieving or building a marketing agency that is a leading example for businesses when they look for a marketing service or do marketing themselves) and Behaviour-driven (after I meet a client of customer and get into my car, it would be a trigger for myself to ask “What could I have done differently that is better?” and “What other solutions that I could have provided to my client or customer in their business?”)
I truly believe that D.U.M.B. goals are crucial in life, do not just settle for S.M.A.R.T. goals. Think of the bigger picture, take me for instance, I have my S.M.A.R.T goals all set right now in view of a particular D.U.M.B. goal. If you are going to build a personal brand that is going to command a large following or representing something, you need to set D.U.M.B. goals so that you inspire those not only in your company but also your customers and people that will do business with you. Because this will create meaning when they do business with you.
To sum it all up, D.U.M.B Goals. Goals that are Dream-driven, Uplifting, Method-friendly and Behaviour-driven, make sure you take time and really think about it as it will define who you are as a person. Set them, and also navigate your S.M.A.R.T. Goals around your D.U.M.B. Goals so that you can change your life and the world around you.
